The Rug Trade was founded in 2013 by Ella Jones, whose background is in fashion design. The aim was to create ethically handcrafted rugs for the modern interior. The Rug Trade combines traditional Moroccan weaving techniques and with newly envisioned designs and colour combinations. The rugs are individually hand-woven by Berber people living in Moroccan mountain villages, helping to keep this beautiful old craft alive and support these ancient communities.
The Rug Trade's first collection 'Rough Diamond', uses the traditional 'boucherouite' rug making technique which is unique to Morocco, and is made using recycled materials. The individual rug designs: 'Marquise' 'Mazarin' and 'Asscher' are all named after cuts of diamond, which are reflected within the designs. These rugs are aimed to be sympathetic to the modern home, whilst keeping the bold vibrancy and playfulness that can be seen in antique boucherouite rugs.
The latest addition to The Rug Trade's collection is the 'Trapeze' rug which is made using a different traditional moroccan rug making technique known as 'Azilal'. These rugs are made from 100% wool, and are in the cream and black colours that the vintage versions of the azilal rugs are typically found in.
